1 Appearance It occurs as clear, colourless, oily liquid.
2 Identification
Test (A)
(A) Infrared absorption spectrophotometry.
3 Solubility It is freely soluble in 50% alcohol; sparingly soluble in water. Miscible with alcohol, with ether, and with chloroform.
4 Specific gravity Between 1.042 and 1.047.
5 Peroxide value Not more than 5.
6 Residue on evaporation The residue weighs NMT 5 mg, corresponding to NMT 0.05%.
7 Organic impurities, Benzaldehyde and other related substances Specified test.
8 Acidity NMT 1.0 mL of 0.1 N sodium hydroxide is required to change the color of the indicator to pink.
9 Clarity of solution The Sample solution shows the same clarity as that of water, or its opalescence is not more pronounced than that of Reference suspension 1.
10 Color of solution The Sample solution has the color of water.
11 Refractive index 1.538–1.541 at 20°C.
12 Assay Not less than 98.0% and not more than 100.5%.

The shelf life is 3 years. Preserve in tight containers, protected from light.
